Anatomical Circus Robert Asman |

At the time my daughter was born (1987), I became fascinated with the human body; especially the female. My interest was not just with a biological entity; but as a universal source that encompasses energy, consciousness, beauty, iconography, landscape, texture, color or the human elements of mystery that the photographic medium can depict so well. Also at that time, the London Figurative School of Painting led by Francis Bacon and Lucien Freud was receiving a lot of attention, and I was fascinated with their working/creative processes which were based on working off the "sensations" emitted from photographs. That approach inspired me to make actual photographs; and then work off the sensations from the negative (both film and paper) to abstract or alter the appearance of the figure with somewhat traditional darkroom techniques. This approach allowed the process to take over in order to create surprising and serendipitous textures, colors, and scenarios from the silver in the paper, as opposed to paint. The following photographs are from that source and inspiration and I refer to them as the "Anatomical Circus." |
