"Parochial Enigmas", 2009
Robert Asman
I have been taking and making these photographs during the last year in and around Asheville, North Carolina. These scenes are not illustrative or defining of Asheville which is one of the most beautiful, interesting, and tolerant small townes in the country. Instead, they are an emotional and intuitive historical document of what is taking place in the country and world due to the hubris and avarice of leadership and priviledge. I have been subconsciously attracted to enigmatic mythological and ambiguous metaphorical scenes and surfaces which are visually enticing and allow me to extend and enhance the structure of the photograph in the darkroom printmaking process.
The photographs have been made on fiber based silver gelatin paper by applying the developer selectively with brushes and sticks. The prints are fixed, selenium toned, tea stained and finished to archival standards. Needless to say the prints are unique; and are signed, titled, and dated on verso in pencil and estate embossed on lower right of print.
