Sculpted Figure
Robert Asman

I refer to these photographs as "sculpted" photographs because they are made with paper negatives that are physically manipulated by sanding, tearing, cutting, slicing and stapling in order to create different surfaces of texture, depth, form, and dimensionality. This is usually the domain of sculpture, but one of the attributes of the traditional silver photographic process that I find fascinating is its sculptural dimension which I like to exploit neurologically.

Once the paper negative has been worked over, it is then placed in the enlarger and this improvised traditional darkroom process becomes the medium of completion. These images are gelatin silver prints that have been selenium toned, bleached, and then tea stained in order to enhance the dimensionality and textural field of the sculpted paper negative. Naturally the prints are unique, but variant prints from the same negatives are part of the working process.
